Aline Murray Kilmer was born August 1, 1888, in Norfolk, Virginia, educated at Rutgers Prep School and the Vail-Deane School in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She and the poet Joyce Kilmer married in 1908. Candles That Burn (New York: George H. Doran, 1919), was her first volume of verse. Vigils followed in 1921, and The Poor King's Daughter and Other Poems in 1925. Selected Poems appeared in 1929. Her Hunting a Hair Shirt and Other Spiritual Adventures, prose essays, came out in 1923. Widowed by Joyce's death in 1918 at the end of the war, she died on October 1, 1941, in Stillwater, New Jersey.
