Faithful

Faithful

Original Text

Bruce Meyer, Mesopotamia: New Poems (Sudbury, On.: Your Scrivener Press, 2009): 47.

I hunger for love and feed you roses,
their perfume fills the room with luxury
because once a year we can afford the act
of generosity spoken from within the heart
that hungers for that flavour of lost paradise
the way a kiss approximates a fine meal.
I put you to my lips and learn of beauty.
Something says love in a dozen roses,
their perfume fills the room with luxury,
with the passion of deep martyred red,
life hidden beneath the skin of things.
They go well with chocolate because love
hungers for that flavour of lost paradise.
It is hard to forget the first taste of it.
It is hard to forget, the first taste of it,
the snowflakes falling gently in your hair,
the fear that someone would catch us there
and think those two are in love before
we were ready to admit it to ourselves,
feeling the passion of deep martyred red,
life hidden beneath the skin of things.
So to celebrate a day meant for birds and bees,
because once a year we can afford the act,
I send you roses and chocolate because love
and snowflakes falling gently in your hair
are the blessings that come from simple faith.
I put you to my lips and learn of beauty.
I hunger for love and feed you roses.
