2Deepening thy voice with the deepening of the night,
3All along the valley, where thy waters flow,
4I walk'd with one I loved two and thirty years ago.
5All along the valley, while I walk'd to-day,
6The two and thirty years were a mist that rolls away;
7For all along the valley, down thy rocky bed,
8Thy living voice to me was as the voice of the dead,
9And all along the valley, by rock and cave and tree,
10The voice of the dead was a living voice to me.

Notes

1] In the summer of 1861 Tennyson revisited the valley in the French Pyrenees, where he had been with Hallam in 1830. Back to Line
