Trifles

Trifles

Original Text
The Home Book of Verse, English and American, comp. Burton Egbert Stevenson, 9th edn. (New York: Henry Holt, ca. 1953). II, 2854.
1The massive gates of Circumstance
2    Are turned upon the smallest hinge,
3And thus some seeming pettiest chance
4    Oft gives our life its after-tinge.
5The trifles of our daily lives,
6    The common things scarce worth recall,
7Whereof no visible trace survives,
8    These are the mainstrings, after all.
