They Will Say

Original Text
Carl Sandburg, Chicago Poems (New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916), p. 9. PS 3537 A618C5 1916 Robarts Library.
1  OF my city the worst that men will ever say is this:
2You took little children away from the sun and the dew,
4And the reckless rain; you put them between walls
5To work, broken and smothered, for bread and wages,
6To eat dust in their throats and die empty-hearted
7For a little handful of pay on a few Saturday nights.
