Song (The Earliest Wish I ever Knew)

Original Text
Poems by Hartley Coleridge (Leeds: F. E. Bingley, 1833): 39. D-10 2741 Fisher Rare Book Library.
1The earliest wish I ever knew
2Was woman's kind regard to win;
3I felt it long e'er passion grew,
4E'er such a wish could be a sin.
5And still it lasts; -- the yearning ache
6No cure has found, no comfort known:
7If she did love, 'twas for my sake,
8She could not love me for her own.
