The Seamstress

The Seamstress

Original Text
Poems of John Galt: A Selection, ed.. G. H. Needler (Toronto: Burns and MacEachern, 1954): 18.
1Miss Peggy Pringle, meek and meager, plies
3And, far in night, by her lone candle tries
5Beneath the turf her hearty father sleeps;
6Her thrifty mother there, assists no more.
7She had a sister, ah! to think, she weeps;
8And her brave brother lies on a far shore.
9Alone, Miss Peggy picks her patient way;
10The path she’s on leads to the house of God,
11And there, his will be done on earth, she’ll pray.
12Three score and ten,--perhaps at four score years –
13Her eiking hemm’d, she’ll look about for shears.
