In an Old Barn
In an Old Barn
Original Text
Selected Poems of Sir Charles G. D. Roberts (Toronto: Ryerson, 1936): 108. PS 8485 O22A17 Robarts Library.
1Tons upon tons the brown-green fragrant hay
3 Up to the rafters where the spider weaves,
4Though few flies wander his secluded way.
5Through a high chink one lonely golden ray,
6 Wherein the dust is dancing, slants unstirred.
7 In the dry hush some rustlings light are heard,
8Of winter-hidden mice at furtive play.
9Far down, the cattle in their shadowed stalls,
10 Nose-deep in clover fodder's meadowy scent,
11 Forget the snows that whelm their pasture streams,
12The frost that bites the world beyond their walls.
13 Warm housed, they dream of summer, well content
14 In day-long contemplation of their dreams.
