No Second Troy

No Second Troy

Original Text

Yeats, William Butler. W. B. Yeats: Selected Poetry: 44-45. Ed. by A. Norman Jeffares. London: Macmillan, 1968.

1Why should I blame her that she filled my days
2With misery, or that she would of late
3Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways,
4Or hurled the little streets upon the great,
5Had they but courage equal to desire?
6What could have made her peaceful with a mind
7That nobleness made simple as a fire,
8With beauty like a tightened bow, a kind
9That is not natural in an age like this,
10Being high and solitary and most stern?
11Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
12Was there another Troy for her to burn?
