The Mother of God

The Mother of God

Original Text

Yeats, William Butler. W. B. Yeats: Selected Poetry: 155. Ed. by A. Norman Jeffares. London: Macmillan, 1968.

1The threefold terror of love; a fallen flare
2Through the hollow of an ear;
3Wings beating about the room;
4The terror of all terrors that I bore
5The Heavens in my womb.
6Had I not found content among the shows
7Every common woman knows,
8Chimney corner, garden walk,
9Or rocky cistern where we tread the clothes
10And gather all the talk?
11What is this flesh I purchased with my pains,
12This fallen star my milk sustains,
13This love that makes my heart's blood stop
14Or strikes a Sudden chill into my bones
15And bids my hair stand up?
