In the Mile End Road
In the Mile End Road
Original Text
Amy Levy, A London Plane-Tree and other Verse (London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1889), p. 50. PR 4886 L25L6 Robarts Library.
2 Comes up the crowded street,
3How little did I think, the morn,
4 My only love to meet!
5Whose else that motion and that mien?
6 Whose else that airy tread?
7For one strange moment I forgot
8 My only love was dead.
Notes
1] Mile End Road in London begins one mile north of the old city gate at Aldgate and runs past the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Hospital and the first Jewish cemetery in modern English (1656-). The Salvation Army started up in this vicinity in 1865. Back to Line
