Mercurius Gallo-Belgicus
Original Text
Donne, John. The Satires, Epigrams and Verse Letters of John Donne. Edited by W. Milgate. London: Oxford University Press, 1967: 53.
1Like Esop's fellow-slaves, O Mercury,
2Which could do all things, thy faith is; and I
3Like Esop's self, which nothing; I confess
4I should have had more faith, if thou hadst less;
5Thy credit lost thy credit: 'Tis sin to do,
6In this case, as thou wouldst be done unto,
7To believe all. Change thy name: thou art like
8Mercury in stealing, but liest like a Greek.
