Man, A Torch
Man, A Torch
Original Text
George Moses Horton, Poetical Works (Hillsborough, N.C.: D. Heartt, 1845).
1Blown up with painful care and hard to light,
2A glimmering torch blown in a moment out,
3Suspended by a web, an angler's bait,
4Floating at stake along the stream of chance,
5Snatch'd from its hook by the fish of poverty,
6A silent cavern is his last abode;
7The king's repository veil'd with gloom,
8The umbrage of a thousand oziers bowed,
9The couch of hallowed bones, the grave's asylum,
10The brave's retreat and end of ev'ry care.
