2Ruisseau dont mes pleurs troublaient l'onde,
3Prés, colline, forêt profonde,
4Oiseaux qui chantiez sur ces bords,
5Zéphir qu'embaumait son haleine,
6Sentiers où sa main tant de fois
7M'entraînait à l'ombre des bois,
8Où l'habitude me ramène:
9Le temps n'est plus! mon oeil glacé,
10Qui vous cherche à travers ses larmes,
11A vos bords, jadis pleins de charmes,
12Redemande en vain le passé!
13La terre est pourtant aussi belle,
14Le ciel aussi pur que jamais!
15Ah! je le vois, ce que j'aimais,
16Ce n'était pas vous, c'était elle!

1] According to Lamartine, the theme of this poem is imitated from Petrarch but it is also reminiscent of "Le Lac," "Le Vallon," "L'Isolement," and many others of the Premières méditations. It did not appear in the early editions of the poet's works. Back to Line
