I Dug, Beneath the Cypress Shade

I Dug, Beneath the Cypress Shade

Original Text
Thomas Love Peacock, Works (London: R. Bentley, 1875). 3 vols. PR 5160 A2 1875 Robarts Library
1I dug, beneath the cypress shade,
2    What well might seem an elfin's grave;
3And every pledge in earth I laid,
4    That erst thy false affection gave.
5I pressed them down the sod beneath;
6    I placed one mossy stone above;
7And twined the rose's fading wreath
8    Around the sepulchre of love.
9Frail as thy love, the flowers were dead,
10    Ere yet the evening sun was set:
11But years shall see the cypress spread,
12    Immutable as my regret.
