A Good Night
A Good Night
Original Text
Francis Quarles, Divine Fancies: digested into epigrammes, meditations, and observations, Book IV (London: M. F[lesher]. for John Marriott, 1632).
1Close now thine eyes and rest secure;
2Thy soul is safe enough, thy body sure;
4And guards thee, never slumbers, never sleeps.
5The smiling conscience in a sleeping breast
6 Has only peace, has only rest;
7 The music and the mirth of kings
8Are all but very discords, when she sings;
9 Then close thine eyes and rest secure;
10No sleep so sweet as thine, no rest so sure.
