Epitaph
Original Text
A. J. M. Smith, The Complete Poems, ed. Brian Trehearne
(London, Ontario: Canadian Poetry Press, 2007): .
1Weep not on this quiet stone,
2I, embedded here
3Where sturdy roots divide the bone
4And tendrils split a hair,
5Bespeak you comfort of the grass
6That is embodied me,
7Which as I am, not as I was,
8Would choose to be.
