Down by the Salley Gardens

Down by the Salley Gardens

Original Text

Yeats, William Butler. W. B. Yeats: Selected Poetry: 7. Ed. by A. Norman Jeffares. London: Macmillan, 1968.

1Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
2She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
3She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
4But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.
5In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
6And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
7She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
8But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.
