Crying in Sleep

Crying in Sleep

Original Text

The old dog cries out in sleep
his blind head pressed
against my ankle.
I run my hand for comfort
down his thinning fur
frail skin
the brittle bones
that feel like broken shells
washed up on that far-off beach
where once he ran and barked
at threatening waves.
Don’t let him die tonight!
The ground is frozen hard.
I could not bury him
in his own place.
I cried in sleep last night
dreaming I waded in
the shallows on that beach.
Undertow snatched me tightened
swept me out.
Downing I fought for breath,
screaming
I woke.
The dog licked my cheek.
