After Long Silence

After Long Silence

Original Text

Yeats, William Butler. W. B. Yeats: Selected Poetry: 164. Ed. by A. Norman Jeffares. London: Macmillan, 1968.

1Speech after long silence; it is right,
2All other lovers being estranged or dead,
3Unfriendly lamplight hid under its shade,
4The curtains drawn upon unfriendly night,
5That we descant and yet again descant
6Upon the supreme theme of Art and Song:
7Bodily decrepitude is wisdom; young
8We loved each other and were ignorant.
