Original Text
Carl Sandburg, Chicago Poems (New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916), p. 132. PS 3537 A618C5 1916 Robarts Library.
1I SPOT the hills
2With yellow balls in autumn.
3I light the prairie cornfields
4Orange and tawny gold clusters
5And I am called pumpkins.
6On the last of October
7When dusk is fallen
8Children join hands
9And circle round me
10Singing ghost songs
11And love to the harvest moon;
13With terrible teeth
14And the children know
15I am fooling.
Notes
12] jack-o'-lantern: pumpkin carved into a face with slits for eyes, nose and mouth and lighted from within for Halloween. Back to Line
