No Coward's Song

No Coward's Song

Original Text

1I am afraid to think about my death,
2When it shall be, and whether in great pain
3I shall rise up and fight the air for breath
4Or calmly wait the bursting of my brain.
5I am no coward who could seek in fear
6A folk-lore solace or sweet Indian tales:
7I know dead men are deaf and cannot hear
8The singing of a thousand nightingales.
9I know dead men are blind and cannot see
10The friend that shuts in horror their big eyes,
12A living mouse than dead as a man dies.
