A Hoffa Lieutenant Reminisces

A Hoffa Lieutenant Reminisces

Original Text
S. P. Zitner, The Hunt on the Lagoon (Fredericton, N.B.: Goose Lane, 2005): 59.
Even you’re Godamighty
You do what you got to--
Fire, flood, whatever.
Like the neighbourhood I grew up,
Your rent’s behind, you’re on the street,
Your stuff on show, getting remarks.
One time a few of us kids used crowbars.
Landlord got the point. Let us squat,
or he’d be paying mortgage on a woodpile.
Rig by rig and route by route,
we outmuscled, we outbargained,
we outbribed and outlawyered
Them. And we built the union, us.
And no one grudged us what we took.
It was our turn.
First we got statehouse clout, then national.
Then They knew they had to take out Jimmy.
and the limo going nowhere.
They had the power and They took their turn.
