A Daughter of Eve

A Daughter of Eve

Original Text
Christina Rossetti, Goblin Market, The Prince's Progress, and Other Poems (1875). Text from Christina Rossetti, Poems (1890).
1A fool I was to sleep at noon,
2      And wake when night is chilly
3Beneath the comfortless cold moon;
4A fool to pluck my rose too soon,
5      A fool to snap my lily.
6My garden-plot I have not kept;
7      Faded and all-forsaken,
8I weep as I have never wept:
9Oh it was summer when I slept,
10      It's winter now I waken.
11Talk what you please of future spring
12      And sun-warm'd sweet to-morrow:--
13Stripp'd bare of hope and everything,
14No more to laugh, no more to sing,
15      I sit alone with sorrow.
