Afternoons in May
Afternoons in May
Original Text
Pier Giorgio Di Cicco, Dancing in the House of Cards
(Toronto: Three Trees Press, 1977): 50.
1The light closes its tiny fist.
2The trees put up their old ladders.
3Spring is coming with both its eyes closed,
4stumbling against brick. Suddenly its left hand
5is found on my living room floor.
6Quebec is burning too.
7The roads between here and Ontario are green
8with talking buds.
9Huge planks of sunlight maze the roads.
10Oh, it is beautiful to be here.
11On this side of Toronto the lake is seething
12with promises to itself.
13There is a tree on my very own desk.
14Small faces appear, like leaves.
15I stare and stare.
16Behind me, life is beginning to make more sense.
17As the small man in rags goes singing down the street.
