Growing Old

Growing Old

Original Text

The Desolate Star and other poems (Christchurch: Whitcombe and Tombs, 1929): 23.

1This it is to grow old,
2That I shall lose
3The gift of laughter at small and simple things;
4And, if ever old dreams fly past me, the brush of wings,
6Will seem strange and cold.
7I shall have naught but wondering pity for those
8That are all of loveliness now, the flame and the rose.
9I shall despise
10The sudden tears that music brings to the eyes.
