Abominable Snowman

Abominable Snowman

Original Text
Jay Macpherson, Poems Twice Told: The Boatman & Welcoming Disaster (Toronto: Oxford University Press, 1981): 47.
1The guardian stalking his eternal snows
2With backward tread and never any sound
3Afflicts the mind with horror more profound
4Than caves and chasms among which he goes.
5Below the snowline flourish greedy tribes
6Who run with dogs to hunt him as a beast,
7Then pass his pieces round in solemn feast
8Accompanied with triumph-song and gibes.
9The unoffending flesh they take for meat,
10The hairless palms and cheeks, the white sad face,
11Are human, even found in such a place:
12Too like our own the still-reluctant feet.
