"We Women"

"We Women"

Original Text
Palace–Burner: The Selected Poetry of Sarah Piatt, ed. Paula Bennett (Chicago: University of Illinois Press, 2001): 87.
1Heart-ache and heart-break – always that or this:
2    Sometimes it rains just when the sun should shine;
3Sometimes a glove or ribbon goes amiss;
4    Sometimes, in youth, your lover should be mine.
5Still madam frets at life, through pearls and lace
6    (A breath can break her pale heart's measured beat),
7And still demands the maid who paints her face
8    Shall find the world forever smooth and sweet.
