1Noël! Noël? j'entends les cloches dans la nuit...
2Et j'ai, sur ces feuillets sans foi posé ma plume:
3O souvenirs, chantez! tout mon orgueil s'enfuit,
4Et je me sens repris de ma grande amertume.
5Ah! ces voix dans la nuit chantant Noël! Noël!
6M'apportent de la nef qui là-bas, s'illumine,
7Un si tendre, un si doux reproche maternel
8Que mon cœur trop gonflé crève dans ma poitrine...
9Et j'écoute longtemps les cloches, dans la nuit...
10Je suis le paria de la famille humaine,
11A qui le vent apporte en son sale réduit
12La poignante rumeur d'une fête lointaine.
