On Death

Original Text

I.
1Death reign'd with vigour since the Fall,
2    And rides with fury still;
3Nor rich nor poor, nor great nor small,
4    Can e'er resist his will.
II.
5He ravages both night and day,
6    Through all our mortal stage;
7And ev'ry creature falls a prey
8    To his resistless rage.
III.
9Nations and empires he has slain,
10    And laid whole cities waste,
11And doth his cruel siege maintain
12    To sweep the world in haste.
IV.
13Ride forth, O mighty Prince of Peace,
14    And take away his sting.
15Then shall his cruel kingdom cease,
16    And saints his triumph sing.
