City and Country

Original Text:
The Complete Poems of W. H. Davies, intro. by Osbert Sitwell (London: Jonathan Cape, 1963): 512. PR 6007 A8A17
The City has dull eyes,
    The City's cheeks are pale;
The City has black spit,
    The City's breath is stale.
The Country has red cheeks,
    The Country's eyes are bright;
The Country has sweet breath,
    The Country's spit is white.
Dull eyes, breath stale; ink spit
    And cheeks like chalk--for thee;
Eyes bright, red cheeks; sweet breath
    And spit like milk--for me.
