The Bird

Original Text:
F.R. Scott, Selected Poems (Toronto: Oxford University Press, 1966): 25.
1Fluffed and still as snow, the white
2bird lay in a crumple of death
3far, far below the flock which, sailing, heard
4but did not feel, the shot.
5And the lonely boy suddenly grew afraid
6as from his feet the doubt took wing and rose
7up from the feathered hurt like a black bird
8darkening the whole sky in the empty land.
