Richard Crashaw (1613-1649)

Divine Epigrams: On the Baptized Ethiopian

              1Let it no longer be a forlorn hope
              2      To wash an Ethiope;
              3He's wash'd, his gloomy skin a peaceful shade,
              4      For his white soul is made;
              5And now, I doubt not, the Eternal Dove
              6      A black-fac'd house will love.

Notes

1] First published in Steps to the Temple, 1646. Some of the epithets were revised in the enlarged edition of 1648, and in Carmen Deo Nostro (1652). There are also earlier Latin versions.
