Edmund Vance Cooke (1866-1932)

Requiescat in Pace

              1The man who fears to go his way alone,
              2    But follows where the greater number tread,
              3Should hasten to his rest beneath a stone;
              4    The great majority of men are dead.

Notes

1] The Latin phrase in the poem's title is frequently engraved on gravestones and means "Rest in peace."
