Francis Ernley Walrond (ca. 1875-1950)

Meintjes Kopje

              1Meintjes Kopje! Meintjes Kopje!
              2    Do the purple daisies grow
              3On your rugged slopes in spring-time
              4    As they did in years ago,

              5When I walked with one who loved me,
              6    In the days when love was young;
              7When our eyes held glinted laughter
              8    And our sighs were songs unsung?

              9But the laughter fell and faded,
            10    And the wonder-song is still,
            11And the track goes all untrodden
            12    Past the pool and up the hill.

            13Meintjes Kopje! Meintjes Kopje!
            14    Other years your flowers restore,
            15But my love who loved the daisies
            16    Comes to gather them no more.

Notes

1] Meintjes Kopje: Meintjes Kop, a hill from which there are panoramic views of Pretoria, South Africa. The purple daisies still grew there in 2000.
