J. M. Synge (1871-1909)

The Curse

To a sister of an enemy of the author's who disapproved of `The Playboy'

              1Lord, confound this surly sister,
2Blight her brow with blotch and blister,
3Cramp her larynx, lung, and liver,
4In her guts a galling give her.
5Let her live to earn her dinners
              6In Mountjoy with seedy sinners:
              7Lord, this judgment quickly bring,
              8And I'm your servant, J. M. Synge.
