Charles G. D. Roberts (1860-1943)

Philander's Song

(from "The Sprightly Pilgrim")

              1I sat and read Anacreon.
2    Moved by the gay, delicious measure
3I mused that lips were made for love,
4    And love to charm a poet's leisure.

5And as I mused a maid came by
6    With something in her look that caught me.
              7Forgotten was Anacreon's line,
8    But not the lesson he had taught me.

Notes
