Born in Winnipeg on November 27, 1942, Ian Lancashire received his B.A. (1964) at the University of Manitoba and his M.A. (1965) and Ph.D. (1969) at the University of Toronto. He joined the Department of English at Erindale College as Lecturer there in 1968. While serving as Assistant Professor (1969) and Associate Professor (1974), he specialized in Renaissance drama, joined Records of Early English Drama in 1975 as project bibliographer, and for several years was discipline head at Erindale. On the publication of Dramatic Texts and Records of Britain in 1984, he became a full Professor. With the support of the University and IBM Canada, he founded the Centre for Computing in the Humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Science in 1986 and directed it for ten years, stepping down in 1996. During this period Lancashire was a co-developer of two text-analysis programs, MTAS and TACT, hosted the first joint International Conference of the Association for Computing in the Humanities and the Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing, and did bibliographical work in humanities computing. He then turned to edit free educational resources on the World Wide Web: Representative Poetry On-line (1994-), the Early Modern English Dictionaries Database (1996-99), Canadian Poetry (1996-), Renaissance Electronic Texts (1996-), and the University of Toronto English Library (1997-). He teaches poetry, computer applications, science fiction and fantasy, and Shakespeare at New College.

Ian Lancashire and Anne Begor Lancashire married on May 25, 1968, and have three children, Susannah Cannie, David Begor, and Ruth Matilda. His recreations include golf and travel.
